The Short Game.

Chipping.
Ever had the ‘Chip Yips?’ It’s not good. You stand over the ball, look at the target, fully confident and then you hit it! But where does it go? Off at an angle unknown to the laws of Physics!! Yes, you just Sh#~ked it. The reason for this is still being studied by a team of eggheads somewhere in deepest Jobrovia or somewhere similar.

Chipping Y

Chipping can be a frustrating part of the game but there is a sure fire way of getting it right. Once you’ve formed the ‘Y’ set up in the picture, keep that shape through the stroke aiming the club head at the target. This should ensure your game improves and your strokes reduce!!

Here’s a FREE 4-Step Guide to the perfect chip from set up to getting it on the Green, use the link to download the PDF file to keep for future reference.

If you really want to master your Iron Play, I can highly recommend Jeff Taylor’s best selling Ebook on the subject, ‘How to Master the Golf Irons’. It’s packed with tips and tricks for better iron play which will help bring your scores down really quickly.

Big Hole

Putting.
Before we start let me just give you some simple statistics about Putting. It has been proved beyond all reasonable doubt that 100% of short Putts don’t go in the hole!!! Seriously, when your putting, try to NEVER leave the ball short. Why? because if it’s on line it’ll probably go in, if it’s short it most definitely won’t.

Tip: A good tip I was given some time back was to imagine a circle round the hole about the size of a dustbin lid and try to putt the ball so it lands in the back half of it. If your off line but strong enough, you’ve only got a 18” putt to pop in the hole.

I know, reading greens is all part of putting but it’s something you have to deal with on the day. Take into account the conditions, speed of the greens, slopes etc... One thing to bear in mind is that grass has a ‘Knap’, a bit like a snooker table cloth. The Grass actually grows in a certain direction which, if you read it wrong can mean you’re way off line with your putt. Something to bear in mind next time your on the green!!

Bunker Play.
The best way to keep out of the bunkers in the first place is to aim straight at them!! (If only that were not so true, try it next time your’e on the course) Bunkers have put fear in golfers for years but there’s no need to be scared. Getting out of the sand trap is usually not too difficult. Just follow these 3 simple steps and your bunker play will develop leaps and bounds.

Bunker

Tip:
1. Play the ball from back in your stance.
2. Squeeze your feet into the sand so they’re  below the ball.
3. Try to hit behind the ball about 2 inches and remember use a full swing and follow through.
DON’T quit on it and don’t try to ‘Scoop’ the ball into the air. (Let the club do the work)

A good practice drill for improving your bunker play is to find a golf hole with a bunker (not difficult) cup about 8-10 balls in your hands, stand with your back to the bunker and throw the balls over your head. Then play them all exactly where they lie. You’ll soon be more confident with you bunker play.
