Golf Tips for a Better Game.

Here’s the Golf Tips section where we can hopefully improve on some areas of your (and my) Golf Game. We’re going to look at all different areas of this wonderful Game called Golf. Along with all the info you’ll find here, I’ve also put together the Golf Tips Online Ebook which goes into much more detail and includes easy flow graphics which make the Ebook easy to follow.

Let’s start with the basics. You can’t just turn up on Saturday morning and hope to tear up the course by shooting your best ever round! No, you need to prepare. You need to warm up, a few stretches, loosen the shoulders etc.. Here’s a really useful guide to Golfing fitness by Mike Pederson, a Golf fitness trainer. It’s sure to improve your game as it did mine!

So once you’re all warmed up and fighting fit after reading Mike’s book, let’s look at the component parts of ‘The Game of Golf’.

Ball on club

Driving:
My single biggest mistake when I started out was standing on the first tee looking down the fairway and swinging the club so fast, it looked like I was trying to knock the casing off the ball! OK, so Tiger can do it but he practices 5 hours + a day; we don’t. Here’s a great drill I used to get my driving on track  (it probably sounds strange but here goes anyway) Quite simply, don’t try to knock the casing off the ball.

Tip: Look at it this way; S-L-O-W   D-O-W-N!! A natural swing feels comfortable and steady. The Pro I’ve used since my early days (John and his Valium) gave me this advice and it worked a treat. Just by slowing down my swing I was able to hit shots much straighter. “The key”, John said is to “Let the club do the work”.

But not everyone has the same swing. Therefore, the same thing will not work for everyone. You’ll will have much more success if you experiment and fine tune your swing. The Simple Golf Swing is definitely the way forward.

Iron

Iron Play.
Let’s start with the dreaded long irons. Trying to hit a 3 iron off the short stuff can be daunting for any golfer, especially a high handicap club golfer. My problem was hitting the ball ‘Fat’ or worse, ‘Topping’. To combat these problems, the advice I was given was to:Tip:
1. Stand a little further back from the ball.
2. Shorten my back swing. (Don’t wrap the club around your neck too far)
3. Don’t hit down on the ball but ‘Sweep it away’.
All this worked fine.

Short Irons.
Normally I’d hit the short irons pretty well. Then I started to hit them fat or again, top them. To make the necessary changes I simply:
Tip: Put the ball a little further back in my stance and hit down on the ball.
This cured the problem instantly. Hitting down on the ball ensures the ball runs up the face of the club (let the club do the work!) and you’ll probably get some nice zippy back spin!!
